Powering a digital health revolution in Enugu State, Nigeria

In May 2024, Enugu State government entered into a partnership with Elephant Healthcare to digitise all public primary and secondary health facilities across Enugu state and to launch Enugu's first eHealth service.
As part of his transformative healthcare initiative, His Excellency, the Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, has deployed Elephant’s technology to upgrade and modernise healthcare for Enugu's citizens.

Elephant Healthcare will equip over 360 primary and 40 secondary health facilities in Enugu State with tablets, internet connectivity, and a comprehensive EHR system. These include the 260 type 2 primary healthcare centres being newly constructed across the state, under Governor Mbah's visionary leadership. Elephant's lightweight technology will improve quality of care, reduce wait times and ensure that leaders have robust data on how the health system is performing.

Since launching the first facilities in May 2024, 25 facilities have been digitised (including 21 primary healthcare centres and 8 General Hospitals) with over 14.5k patients registered on the system to date, with the impact being felt at every level of the health system:

1) Empowering Enugu’s Health Leaders with live data dashboards:

Elephant provides real-time data through "Mission Control" dashboards installed at the State Ministry of Health and the State Primary Healthcare Development Agency. Armed with this live data, both the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Prof. Emmanuel Obi Ikechukwu, and the Executive Secretary, ENSPHCDA, Dr. Ifeyinwa Ani-Osheku, and their respective teams, are able to monitor each facility’s clinical and operational activity and to respond to disease outbreaks in real time.

Says Dr. Ifeyinwa Ani-Osheku, Executive Secretary of ENSPHCDA:

"Thanks to Elephant for this dedication and strong will to collaborate, we are now better equipped to monitor and evaluate our health centre performances, driving improved healthcare outcomes throughout Enugu.”

The Commissioner for Health, Executive Secretary and Director of the Hospital Management Board have driven this digitisation project, showing steadfast commitment to digital healthcare advancements and leveraging the benefits of digital tools to advance healthcare initiatives in Enugu State.

2) Improving quality of care:

ElephantOS provides clinicians with easy to use tools that are improving the patient interaction for clinicians and patients alike:

"The ElephantOS has really helped me to reduce time spent searching for patients records, as even patients that visited the clinic when I am off duty, I can easily find by few clicks of button" - Record Officer, Hilltop Health Centre
3) Streamlining the patient experience with one card for all facilities:

The Enugu eHealth card gives citizens access to their medical records wherever they are — they can scan the code with their smartphone and enter a secure PIN given to them on registration. The combination of the card and unique verification number ensures that a patient’s records can never be lost, improving care continuity, and giving citizens ownership over their own health.

"What I find interesting about the new system is the fact that you can take it to another health center that makes use of the system and you won't have to pay for a card again” Patient, Nsukka Health Centre
We appreciate the partnership and collaboration with Enugu State and are looking forward to rolling out the technology to more LGAs in the next phase of implementation, ensuring that Enugu's citizens benefit from the Governor's vision for an upgraded and modernised health system.
